He Signed My Freedom Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 08
Over the next few days, Vivian kept sending photos and videos.
At the wilderness training grounds, Noah and Iris introduced her to the other pups.
“This is our mom, and Highridge’s future Luna.”
The other children gathered around them, their eyes wide with envy.
“She’s the lead dancer for the Moon Festival?”
“Your dad is the Alpha and your mom is this pretty—you’re so lucky.”
One of the pups asked, “Then who’s the woman who usually picks you up?”
Noah hesitated for a second.
“She just takes care of the pack manor.”
The cup slipped from my hand and shattered on the floor.
I crouched to pick up the pieces, and a sudden, sharp laugh escaped me.
So in their eyes, my six years of Luna duties had been nothing more than unpaid service.
A week later, the children returned to the pack manor and ran straight into the kitchen the moment they walked in.
“Mom!” Iris said excitedly. “Aunt Vivian twisted her ankle during training, and Dad called the entire medical team over for her!”
Noah added, “Dad even canceled a territorial meeting and stayed with her the whole time.”
Wearing oven mitts, I pulled the last cake out of the oven.
The edges were burnt.
I tipped it into the trash.
“Why did you throw it away?” Iris screamed.
“It’s burnt. You can’t eat it.”
“You did that on purpose!” Noah kicked over the trash can. “You’re getting back at us for what happened last time!”
“Bad mom!” Iris yelled. “We don’t have a mother like you.”
I took off the mitts and looked at them, really looked at them.
Once, their slightest cough could keep me awake all night. Now, all I felt was a vast, quiet distance.
“Good,” I said. “Because I don’t have children like you anymore, either.”
“Go to Vivian from now on.”
I turned and walked toward the stairs.
Behind me, two shrill screams echoed in the hall.
“We hate you! We’ll hate you forever!”
As I stepped onto the third stair, a sudden force slammed into my back.
“Then get out of Highridge!”
