West Coast East Heart Chapter 13
Why was I the only one being so stubborn?
He stared at me, as if trying to judge whether I meant what I said.
When he saw I wasn’t moved at all, he started to panic.
“Eve, do you… do you really not love me anymore?”
I nodded.
“Yes. You don’t love me either, do you?”
“I do! I love you! I’ve always had you in my heart!”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Fine. Then I’m asking you to stay here and join Nexagen for me. Will you do it?”
He froze.
“You’ve always used love to trap me, to make me sacrifice. Now I’m asking you to sacrifice once. Will you?”
He pressed his lips tightly together. A long time passed before he spoke.
“But Clara is all alone…”
“Does she love you? Is she willing to come back to the US with you for your sake?”
Adrian fell silent.
He wasn’t confident that Clara would sacrifice anything for him.
Five years ago, Clara came to him crying.
“I want to go study at Cambridge. It’s just too bad… I’m in second place.”
Back then, he tried to persuade her.
“Cambridge is so far away. If you go, we won’t be able to see each other. It’s better if Evelyn goes instead.”
But Clara wouldn’t have it. She only cried harder.
“But I really love that place. If I don’t go, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”
He couldn’t resist her pleading.
So he used the excuse of acute appendicitis and forced me to stay.
Now, if he went and asked her:
“Clara, are you willing to come back to the US with me?”
She would absolutely refuse.
After all, she had broader prospects in Europe, and she’d never cared much about any sense of belonging.
