West Coast East Heart Chapter 14

West Coast East Heart Chapter 14

I looked at his troubled expression and let out a hollow laugh.

“See? She won’t sacrifice for you. You won’t sacrifice for me. Yet you used the name of love to make me sacrifice. Where did you find the nerve?”

Adrian lowered his head, his face full of shame.

He had always been happy to accept everything I gave, taking it all for granted a long time ago.

So I did have objections all along.

So my heart had been hurting all along.

I stared at him. I couldn’t hold back the one question burning in my heart.

“This time when you came back, did you go to Arlington National Cemetery to visit your grandparents?”

He was taken aback.

“Do you still remember which section their headstones are in?”

He opened his mouth. He couldn’t say.

“Adrian, you’ve forgotten. You’ve forgotten where your own roots are.”

The color drained from his face more and more. He staggered backward, his figure swaying.

When had he started forgetting even this?

Suddenly, his phone rang.

He glanced at it, hesitated, but still picked up.

Clara’s voice came through, full of grievance.

“Adrian, my stomach hurts so much… Can you come back soon?”

He looked at me, then looked at his phone.

“You should go back. She needs you.”

“Eve, I…”

“Go. Remember to sign the divorce papers.”

He stood there, hesitating for a long moment. In the end, he turned around.

After a few steps, he looked back.

“Eve, once I take care of things over there, I’ll come back for you.”

I didn’t say anything.

But I knew he wouldn’t be coming back.

His heart had changed.

Naturally, his direction had veered off course too.

How could he still remember the way home?

Just as I expected, three months passed.

His calls became fewer and fewer.

From one a day, to one a week, to eventually not even one a month.

I knew Clara had consumed all his energy.

Today she had a headache, tomorrow a stomach ache. The day after that she was in a bad mood, and the day after that something else.

He was like a kite on a string. With her holding the line, he couldn’t go anywhere.
