West Coast East Heart Chapter 15
One time, he called. His voice was exhausted.
“Eve, Clara’s in the hospital again. The doctor says it’s psychological. She has severe anxiety.”
“Oh.”
“She’s alone in Switzerland. No friends. No family. She’s very lonely.”
“Mm.”
“So… I can’t leave her right now.”
“I understand.”
“Eve, you’re not angry?”
“Why would I be angry?”
He was silent for a moment.
“You really don’t care anymore?”
“I used to care. But you didn’t care that I cared.”
He was speechless.
“Remember to sign.”
I hung up the phone.
By the fourth month, he signed the divorce papers. He sent me a very long text message.
“Evelyn, I’m sorry.”
“I know anything I say now is too late, but I still want to tell you. I’m sorry.”
“I admit it. I did have Clara in my heart. Not as a friend, but… that way.”
“I don’t know when it started. I thought I could control it, but I couldn’t. I don’t ask for your forgiveness. I only hope you’ll live well from now on. I’ve left you most of our shared assets. This is the only compensation I can offer.”
I looked at that message for a long, long time.
Then I replied with a single word.
“Okay.”
I didn’t cry.
I wasn’t angry.
I just felt… it was over.
