“But I don’t want it anymore.”
“I don’t want a husband who has someone else in his heart. I don’t want a marriage where I’m the backup option.”
“I don’t want to waste my energy on meaningless feelings. I want to focus without distraction on what I want to do. Do you understand that?”
Adrian hesitated. He seemed to have made a firm decision.
“If I cut off all contact with Clara, would you come back?”
I shook my head gently.
“No.”
“Because you don’t have the heart to cut Clara off. You can’t bear it. Even if you forced yourself for a few days, the moment she cries, you’ll go soft.”
“And besides, I’m determined to stay in California. I will absolutely never go to Switzerland with you.”
“I won’t give a second chance to a marriage where the trust is already broken. No matter the reason.”
My resoluteness left Adrian completely stunned.
He had always thought that if he just coaxed me enough, if he just apologized properly, I would eventually come around.
After all, I’d never made a scene before.
