After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 08
“Four years ago, on my birthday, you bought me a matcha cake. That night, I had an allergic reaction and an acute asthma attack. I spent three hours in the ER. After I was discharged, you held me and swore you would never let me touch anything with matcha in it again for the rest of my life.”
The smile left my face.
“You didn’t forget. You’ve just started confusing everything Chloe likes with things I’m supposed to like, too.”
“Mavis, I…” Truett panicked, reaching for my hand again. “I really forgot. The project has been so crazy lately, I—”
“Mavis, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you were allergic!”
Chloe immediately pulled her hand back.
But as she did, the scalding latte splashed across the back of my hand.
I jerked back with a sharp intake of breath as the skin instantly turned red.
Before I could say a word, Chloe was already stumbling backward with a cry, falling straight into Truett’s arms.
“Truett, I didn’t mean to… Is Mavis still so upset about the bet that she deliberately wouldn’t take it…?”
Truett instinctively wrapped an arm around her shoulders, the words flying out before he could stop them.
“Mavis, if you’re angry, take it out on me! Why are you bullying a kid? She came here out of the kindness of her heart. Did you really have to burn yourself just to blame her?”
I looked at the angry red skin on my hand, then at the way he was shielding Chloe.
In that moment, all my anger just… evaporated.
Just then, Jenna walked in.
She was holding my discharge papers in one hand and pulling my suitcase with the other.
“All set. The car’s downstairs. Perfect timing.”
Without even glancing at Truett, she draped my coat over my shoulders.
When Truett saw the suitcase, he finally looked panicked.
“Discharged? You still have pneumonia. Where are you going?”
He shoved Chloe aside and strode toward me, trying to block my way.
I sidestepped his hand and put on my coat.
“To the Austin branch. My transfer was approved. My flight is at ten tonight.”Â
