After My Fiancé Abandoned Me I Married My Stepbrother Chapter 06
When the plane landed, rain was falling over Gray Harbor.
Damian came to pick me up himself.
He wore a black coat and stood in the rain, a neat line of cars waiting behind him.
He walked to me and draped his coat over my shoulders.
“Are you cold?”
“I’m fine.”
“There is hot tea in the car.”
I got into the car with him.
Once the door closed, the sound of rain was shut outside.
Damian did not ask about Vincent.
He did not ask what had happened at the airport.
I spoke first.
“Damian, I know this marriage alliance is also a transaction for you. Don’t worry. I won’t interfere with your private life. Three years from now, if you want to end it, I will leave.”
“Who told you I brought you here just to send you away in three years?”
“The Morettis said you had someone else in your heart.”
Damian looked at me.
“You still believe what the Morettis say?”
I did not answer.
He reached out and adjusted the coat around me.
“Serafina, in Gray Harbor, you don’t need to rely on anyone’s charity for a place.”
“Whatever you want, take it yourself.”
The car drove into the Vitale estate.
Bodyguards lined both sides of the gate.
The butler got out first and opened the door.
“Donna Vitale.”
Everyone at the entrance bowed their heads.
I paused for half a second before stepping out.
Only then did Damian stand beside me and continue the conversation we had left unfinished.
“And as for who is in my heart, you will know one day.”
I looked at Damian in confusion.
He only smiled, then turned and left.
The butler led me to the room on the second floor.
The closet had already been filled with clothes, all in the right sizes.
On the desk sat a new computer.
Beside it were Gray Harbor’s account books for the past three years, maps of the docks, and several unsigned contracts.
I opened one of them.
“These are for me too?”
“Don Damian said you may start with the smallest warehouse first. If there are problems in the accounts, you may mark them directly. If you need manpower, you may command me at any time.”
The butler paused, then added:
“The three transport routes the Moretti family promised to hand over have not been delivered. Not one. Don Damian has not pressed them. He only asked the legal department to seal the agreement.”
I looked at him.
“Why not press them?”
“He said overdue debts are more useful than debts paid on time. During future negotiations, we can make them pay much more.”
That night, Damian did not disturb me.
Early the next morning, I went to the docks.
At first, the dock workers did not accept me.
One manager pushed the ledger in front of me, his tone perfunctory.
“If Donna cannot understand this, you may leave it to us.”
I picked up a pen and circled three numbers in the ledger.
“These three payments were recorded twice.”
“And this shipment was reported as damaged on paper, but in reality, it left the port through the west district warehouse.”
The manager’s face changed.
I closed the ledger.
“Before the end of the day, send the real accounts to my office.”
“If you cannot, I will have Damian’s men investigate.”
After that day, no one treated me like a marriage piece waiting to be arranged.
Later, I learned that Vincent had not only locked down the airport that day.
He had sealed other places too.
Many families whose travel had been delayed were furious.
The old Don Moretti called Vincent back that same day.
“You chose Isabella last night, and today you lock down the city for Serafina. Now every family is laughing at the Morettis.”
Vincent did not explain.
Isabella stood to one side, still wearing that ring.
“Don Moretti,” she said with red eyes, “I do not want to make things difficult for Vincent. If the family thinks I am unsuitable, I can leave.”
Several Moretti elders looked at Vincent.
“Since the ring has already been worn, the engagement ceremony cannot be delayed.”
Vincent finally spoke.
“I will not be engaged to her.”
The meeting room fell silent.
Isabella’s tears fell at once.
“Vincent, you chose me in front of everyone last night. If you say there will be no engagement now, then what am I?”
“You know exactly what you wanted.”
Vincent looked at the ring on her hand.
“I will have someone take that ring back.”
Isabella stepped back.
“You cannot treat me this way.”
“You already treated Serafina this way. You cannot do the same to me.”
But Vincent no longer cared.
