Preston rushed past me without a glance and headed straight out the door.
By the time I ran after them, the car was already pulling away.
Leo wasn’t my biological child, but he was the child I had raised.
There was no way I could just ignore this.
Gritting my teeth, I called Preston and asked which hospital they were going to.
There was a trace of frustration in his voice.
“Sorry. It was a rush. I left you behind.”
Holding the phone, a wave of misery washed over me.
That was Preston.
Polite. Considerate.
And it had always been true that he didn’t love me.
By the time I got to the hospital, the doctor was examining Leo.
“Has the child ever had an allergic reaction before? Do either of his parents have a history of allergies?”
Preston gestured to Juliette.
“She’s his mother.”
Juliette shot Preston a quick glance, unable to hide the delight on her face.
“I’m allergic to peanuts. Is Leo the same?”
I stood in the distance, watching them, feeling like a complete outsider.Â
