Among All The Stars I Found You Chapter 12

I knew nothing of what was happening with the Rhodes family.

After leaving New York, I had nowhere else to go, so I booked a flight to Savannah.

It was a place I had always wanted to see.

Before, I’d never had the money or the time.

Later, after marrying Preston, I always felt that my position was too shameful to ask for something like a vacation.

But now, it didn’t matter.

I was free.

What I didn’t expect was that the moment the plane landed and I turned my phone on, it was flooded with missed call notifications.

The person who had called the most was Preston.

In that short time, he had called over a hundred times.

I pressed my lips together, a dull ache in my chest.

The divorce papers were signed. Why was he so desperate to find me?

Did he want the two million dollars back?

Just then, he called again.

I meant to decline, but my finger slipped and I answered.

I regretted it instantly.

Hanging up now would just make me look petty.

The line was silent for a long moment after the call connected.

Finally, I spoke first.

“I already signed the divorce papers. If you regret giving me the money, then just pretend they were never signed.”

I liked him.

But I couldn’t walk away with nothing.

“Where are you?”

His voice was rough.

For a second, I almost thought he’d been crying.

But I dismissed the idea almost immediately.

Preston wasn’t the type to lose control.

“I’m in Savannah,” I said honestly.

“That far?”

His voice trembled slightly.

That set me off.

Was he complaining that I’d gone too far because he was worried I wouldn’t come back to finalize the paperwork?

Was he really that desperate to be with Juliette?

All the frustration I’d been bottling up for the past two days came pouring out.

“Even if you hand the papers to a lawyer today, the process won’t be instant. So if you’re hoping to marry Juliette right away, you can’t.”

I hung up as soon as the words were out.

The second I did, I regretted it.

What if he got angry and took the money back?

All these years, I had always been so careful around him, never once raising my voice.

How had I lost control now?

I tapped my forehead lightly, then touched my stomach.

It was going to take a lot of money to raise a child.

After I calmed down, I told myself that if Preston called again, I would apologize properly.

But he never called back.

And when it came to calling him myself, I found I was too stubborn to be the first to back down.

That stubbornness only lasted about ten minutes.

I told myself that if he didn’t contact me by tonight, I would call him in the morning.

But that night, I didn’t get a call from him.

What I got instead was a news alert.

Rhodes Group CEO Patrick Rhodes had been in a car accident.
