At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 20

On the day of the divorce mediation, Graham brought the moon wind chime.

He set it on the table and pushed the wooden plaque I had carved for Iris toward me.

“I packed up all her things.”

I reached out and took the plaque, my fingers carefully avoiding his.

“They were always mine.”

“I know.”

He had dark circles under his eyes and had lost a noticeable amount of weight in just a few weeks.

“The house, the savings, my trust income… if you’ll come back, it’s all yours.”

My lawyer started to speak, but I raised a hand to stop him.

“Graham, even now, you still think I left because of what I wasn’t getting.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“Then what do you mean?”

His lips trembled.

“I just want to do something—anything—to make you hate me a little less.”

“I stopped living on hate a long time ago.”

He stared at me, uncomprehending.

I set the joint account records on the table.

“This was the money we saved for Iris. Return my half.”

Then, the papers for the seaside property.

“My share has already been listed for sale. You will not interfere.”

And finally, the divorce agreement.

“Sign it.”

Graham didn’t pick up the pen.

“And if I don’t?”

“Then we go to trial.” My voice was flat. “The hotel records, the insurance beneficiary, everything you told the police—it all becomes public record. You, better than anyone, know what that will cost you.”

He looked at me, and the last flicker of hope in his eyes died.

“Nora… is there really nothing left?”

“The hospital called you twice.”
