Everyone Betrayed Me While I Carried His Baby Chapter 04

I froze, my eyes fixed on Cassian.

He wouldn’t look at me.

Adriana stepped in front of Jenna, her eyes blazing.

“Seren, get a clue. *You’re* the other woman here.”

My mother produced a psychiatric evaluation report and began apologizing to the reporters.

“I’m so sorry. My daughter has struggled with her mental health for years. She’s been obsessed with Cassian, and she even drugged him. She’s caused Jenna so much pain. On her behalf, I apologize to all of you.”

I stared at my mother in disbelief as tears streamed down my face.

“Mom, what are you saying? She’s the one who—”

Before I could finish, Cassian was there with a group of medical staff.

He took the report from my mother, and without giving me a chance to say another word, they plunged a syringe full of sedative into my arm.

The last thing I saw before the world went dark was Cassian and Jenna standing together, their fingers laced.

They didn’t even glance in my direction.

They took my phone.

They locked me in a room, less than a hundred square feet, for an entire month.

I struggled, I fought, I tried to escape. Once, I nearly broke my leg in the process, but I never made it out.

When I was eight months pregnant, Cassian finally came to see me.

He brought my favorite blueberry muffins and even reached out to smooth the hair back from my face.

“I know this has been hard on you. We were just afraid of what you might do to Jenna.”

“That marriage certificate was just a technicality so we could get the baby’s birth certificate. After you give birth, I’ll divorce her.”

“All you have to do is admit that you were the one who came between us and formally apologize to Jenna. Then we’ll let you out.”

Clutching my heavy belly, I lowered my head and repeated the words three times.

“I’m sorry. I’m the other woman. I won’t bother you again.”

I looked up at him. “Is that enough?”

Cassian’s face was strained.

His lips parted, then closed. His hands clenched into fists at his sides.

Finally, he just sighed and took me home.

I packed my bags as quickly as I could, ready to leave for good.

I had just stepped out of the bedroom when a group of people burst through the front door.

Jenna was sobbing, grabbing at my hand. “Please, Seren. Give me back my baby.”

“I was planning Angela’s christening. The second you show up, the baby disappears. If you have a problem with me, take it out on me. Don’t you dare touch my daughter.”

Cassian was right behind her. His hand shot out, closing around my throat.

“Angela is a newborn. Are you insane? You’d hurt a baby?”

My breath caught. Through gritted teeth, I forced out the words.

“I didn’t.”

“I’m a mother, too. I would never hurt a child.”

“Cassian, if anything happens to Angela, I don’t want to live anymore!” Jenna cried, lunging toward the wall. My parents rushed to stop her.

“Why are you wasting your breath on her? Just do it!”

Adriana rushed past them. She yanked open the nightstand drawer, found the needles I used for suture practice, and aimed one straight for the soft skin under my fingernail.

“I didn’t do it!”

I shook my head, my eyes pleading with Cassian.

He just turned his face away, his silence a clear permission.

They all knew how much my hands meant to me, that my dream was to be a surgeon.

They knew this was the one thing that could break me.

But I hadn’t done anything. What was I supposed to confess?

“Seren, you’re forcing me to do this!” Adriana hissed.

The needle slid into the flesh under my nail, prying it from its bed.

The pain was so absolute my whole body convulsed. I couldn’t even scream; tears just poured down my face.

Just as she was about to drive in a second needle, the police called.

“Hello. The child has been found. We need the family to come to the station as soon as possible.”

Ecstasy flashed across Cassian’s face. The next second, he shoved me aside.

The whole group scrambled for the door.

I fell hard, and a pool of blood quickly spread out from beneath me.

“Baby…”

I dragged myself toward the door, only to find they had locked it from the outside.

A violent cramp seized my lower abdomen.

I looked down at the red staining the floor, spreading wider and wider. Tears slid slowly down my cheeks.

My fingers finally closed around the fruit knife on the nightstand, and I prepared to slash my wrist.

Just then, the door burst open, splintering off its hinges.

A tall figure rushed in, silhouetted against the light.

He swept me into his arms, his voice shaking.

“Seren, I’m late.”
