He Accused Me Of Stealing But I Heard The Truth Chapter 08
Maisie wrinkled her nose. “The way she looks at you is like that mean goose in the park that always tries to steal my crackers.”
I laughed, but my eyes began to burn.
Derek found out that evening that I’d been forced out.
His car was parked outside the aid center. The window slid down, and he spoke in the same commanding tone he used for everything.
“You lost your job?”
“News travels fast.”
“Maisie just got out of intensive care, and you have nowhere for her to go after discharge. How long are you going to keep this up?”
An assistant handed me a key.
“Weston Group has a serviced apartment in River North. I kept a two-bedroom unit open. Move in for now. I’ll cover it.”
I didn’t take the key.
“I’m not your employee, and I’m not someone you can hide away in an apartment. You don’t get to decide where I live.”
Derek’s jaw tightened.
“Do you think I’m offering you pity?”
“You’re waiting for me to become the woman I was six years ago—the one who would lower her head and accept whatever you ordered.”
He went still.
We stared at each other through the open car door.
After a long moment, he let out a short, bitter laugh.
“And you think you can still make me bend to your will?”
I hoisted my bag onto my shoulder and walked away.
He didn’t follow me.
The next day, the attending physician told me the hospital had activated an aid program for pediatric immune disorders.
