He Accused Me Of Stealing But I Heard The Truth Chapter 09
The medication and part of the hospital bill had been approved.
I thought it had gone through Illinois Medicaid.
When the nurse handed me the papers, she said, “Mr. Weston asked for it to be paid from his personal account, and he requested that his name not appear on the billing.”
I stood at the nurses’ station for a long time, the documents limp in my hand.
Six years ago, buying a single bottle of prenatal vitamins meant filling out a request form and waiting for Rachel’s approval.
Now Derek had learned how to hide his money where I couldn’t see it.
It didn’t make me feel any better.
When I went to Weston Group to find him, he was in a meeting.
His assistant stopped me outside the conference room. I waited in the corridor for an hour.
When the doors finally opened, Derek emerged first, followed by more than a dozen executives.
Rachel was carrying his coat. When she saw me, the corner of her mouth twitched.
“Erin, Derek doesn’t have time right now. You can tell me what this is about.”
I ignored her.
“Was the hospital aid your doing?” I asked Derek.
He stopped walking.
“Yes.”
“Take it back. I’ll work it out with the hospital social worker.”
Rachel gave a soft, condescending laugh.
“And how, exactly, do you plan to ‘work it out’? By calling those organ traffickers again?”
A muscle tightened in Derek’s jaw. He told the others to go on ahead, then came to stand before me.
“And what’s your reason for refusing this time?”
“I don’t need your personal charity.”
“Erin, you’re using Maisie’s life to punish me.”
“I’m not punishing you.” I looked him in the eye. “I just know that money from the Weston family always comes with conditions. The relocation fund did. The payment guarantee did. This aid will, too.”
He looked at me as if he couldn’t comprehend what I was saying.
[Why does she keep pushing me away?]
[I’m not making her sign anything. I’m not even putting my name on the bills.]
[She doesn’t want the money, and she doesn’t want a place to live. She just doesn’t want any connection to me at all.]
