He Asked For Space I Left With His Baby Chapter 12

There was no way to know how long Vanessa had been lingering outside the room.

She walked in with a hesitant smile.

“No.” Vanessa stared at him, stunned.

“But… you always help me with these things.”

Roman’s face was unreadable. “Then it’s time you learned.”

Vanessa blinked, her smile slowly dissolving.

She turned to me.

“Nora, please don’t be angry with Roman because of me.”

I gave her a polite smile. “No need to worry. He and I aren’t together anymore.”

For a split second, an emotion flickered across Vanessa’s face.

Relief. It was gone almost as quickly as it appeared.

“I never wanted to cause trouble between you two.”

Roman finally looked up from the papers in his hands.

“If you’re not sure about the seating chart, talk to the family secretary.”

Vanessa gaped at him, clearly not expecting that response.

“I let you rely on me for things you should have learned to handle on your own.”

His voice was quiet, but laced with regret.

“I called it duty. I told myself I was just looking out for you because our families were close. But somewhere along the line, I lost sight of where that duty was supposed to end.”

Vanessa clutched the folder tighter. “It never bothered you before.”

“It should have,” he answered softly.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the man who had always been in her corner was no longer going to fix everything for her. She turned and walked out without another word.

The door clicked shut, and the room fell silent.

After a long moment, Roman said, “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what the groom said at the wedding.”

“For years, I thought I was being fair to everyone. I was patient with strangers. I spent time with Vanessa because I thought it was the right thing to do.”

He looked straight at me.

“And somehow, I expected the woman I loved to ask for less.”

His voice cracked. “I saved all my kindness for everyone but my own girlfriend.”

He closed his eyes for a moment. “I’m sorry. I know that’s not enough. But if there’s any part of you that still cares, could you please give me one last chance?”

I picked up my phone and opened my banking app.

“Send me the bill for the surgery, the hospital stay, and anything else you paid for. I’ll reimburse you.”
