He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 04
For my “secret correspondence,” my father confiscated my phone and car keys and ordered me to spend the night handwriting a one-hundred-page apology.
Vanessa had also hidden her contact with Nolan, but since she was the one getting engaged, she received nothing more than a gentle reprimand.
As we left the study, she leaned in close.
“You really did hide him well,” she whispered. “But I’m smarter.”
“I went through your old posts on literary forums until I found accounts with a similar writing style. Then I had someone follow you, figure out which reading rooms you used, and track down the books one by one.”
“All I had to do was copy your notes in my own hand and tell Nolan I was the one writing them. He believed me instantly.”
She lifted her chin, smug.
“I didn’t even have to try. He took one look at my face and was ready to give me the world.”
A cold fury washed over me. I clenched my fists.
I had always thought she was simply spoiled. I never imagined she was capable of this—spying on me, invading my privacy, and stealing someone’s identity without a shred of remorse.
Seeing my anger only made her expression turn colder.
“You’d better watch what you say to Nolan. If you don’t, I’ll tell everyone you tried to steal your own sister’s fiancé.”
“The whole Greenvale Pack will know. Who would ever want anything to do with you then?”
She was wasting her breath.
After what I’d heard Nolan say in the conservatory, I had already given up.
Still, I met her gaze.
“If you stole this, Vanessa, you’d better hold on to it.”
“Because if you try to ruin my life again, we’ll both go down together.”
Her face paled, but she didn’t say another word.
That night, I wrote until my left hand was swollen and raw. A werewolf’s body heals fast, but the repetitive strain made my joints burn.
Mother brought in some ointment and had just started rubbing it into my skin when Vanessa texted, asking her to come help choose engagement dresses.
Mother left without a second thought.
I didn’t try to stop her.
She had walked away from me when I was delirious with fever because Vanessa was scared. A little pain in my hand was nothing.
For years, my only escape had been books.
History, sociology, agriculture, astronomy—even ancient legends from the Old Continent. I read everything. It was the one thing Vanessa had no interest in, the one area where she never tried to compete.
I thought Nolan loved books, too. I thought that even if he ended up with Vanessa, they would have nothing to talk about.
But in the end, he still chose her.
Maybe this was just my fate.
