He Cheated With My Friend My Parents Helped Chapter 14
Laura frowned.
“What good will that do? Even if Margot’s gone, he’s not going to marry you.”
“We agreed from the start. You would not destroy Margot’s marriage.”
Sienna’s temper flared.
“Stop pretending. You take my side when you’re with her, and you protect her when you’re with me.”
“Do you think taking care of two daughters at arm’s length makes you a good mother? You don’t have the right to call yourself one.”
She grabbed her coat and stormed out of the hotel.
Laura sat on the edge of the bed and cried. Three years ago, she’d thought she could hide everything and preserve both her daughters’ lives. Only now did she understand that the entire cost had been paid by Margot.
After I landed at Logan Airport, I contacted my old college classmate, Julian Hart.
He was a project manager at a research institute in Cambridge and had invited me to join his team more than once.
“I’m sorry this is so sudden,” I said. “I should have given you more notice.”
He cut me off immediately.
“Don’t be ridiculous. If you’re willing to come, I’ll set up a formal interview.”
At first, I had only wanted to get as far from Seattle as possible. I needed time to heal.
Julian helped me rent an apartment. He wasn’t my direct supervisor, so any hiring decision would be made by committee.
A month later, I passed the interview and started work at the institute.
The work was absorbing, and my hours were reasonable. I started learning how to cook.
Julian lived in the apartment upstairs and would often show up with a bag of groceries in exchange for a home-cooked meal.
Slowly, I eased into this quiet new life.
When the legal waiting period ended, Gabriel raised no objections, and the judge signed the divorce decree.
A few weeks later, I came home from work and was shocked to see Gabriel standing outside my apartment building.
His jaw was dark with stubble, and his right eye was bloodshot.
The moment he saw me, his face lit up.
He rushed forward and pulled me into a crushing embrace.
“Mags. I finally found you.”
I shoved him away, hard.
Before I could say a word, he grabbed my hand.
“I was wrong. Please, don’t let this be the end for us. Please?”
