He Chose His Assistant So She Married Another Man Chapter 05

Daniel froze.

He frowned, pulled the phone away from his ear, and checked the number he’d dialed.

It was Emma’s.

No mistake.

He put the phone back to his ear.

“I think there’s been a mix-up. I’m looking for Emma—not some bride.”

Chloe immediately asked, “What’s going on? What bride?”

The other end of the line was noisy.

People laughing, people clapping, celebratory music playing.

It did sound like a wedding.

Daniel assumed I was still throwing a tantrum—that I’d gotten someone to say this just to mess with him.

He was only annoyed.

It had already been a week. I still wasn’t over it?

No calls, no messages, and now having someone pull this on him.

How childish.

“Sir, if you don’t mind my asking—what’s your relationship to her?” the person asked.

Daniel’s frown deepened.

Emma hadn’t saved his contact with a label?

He didn’t think too much about it. He answered directly, “I’m her boyfriend.”

The person on the other end seemed to short-circuit, their voice catching.

“Boy—boyfriend? But she’s—”

Right then, the airport PA announced boarding.

Daniel didn’t catch what they said after that. He only said coldly, “Tell Emma I’m coming home today.”

Then he hung up.

“What did Emma say?” Chloe asked. “Is she still mad at me?”

“Nothing.” Daniel walked as he talked. “She didn’t answer. Someone else picked up.”

Chloe let out a breath of relief.

“God, you scared me. I thought Emma was still upset. It’s been a whole week—based on how things usually go, she should’ve cooled off ages ago.”

Daniel didn’t respond.

This entire week, I hadn’t reached out once.

All the little gestures of care I used to send during his trips—gone.

The plane landed at ten that night.

Daniel dropped Chloe off first, then turned around and headed home.

On the way back, his phone stayed silent.

He’d texted me as soon as he landed, telling me he was back.

But even now, I hadn’t replied.

What was I so busy with that I couldn’t send a single text back?

Or was I still angry—deliberately ignoring him?

Forget it. He’d deal with it at home.

Worst case, he’d apologize, and it would all blow over.

But when Daniel got home, Emma wasn’t there.

The apartment was pitch dark.

He frowned, uneasy.

At this hour, if Emma wasn’t home—where would she be?

He pulled out his phone and called her. Six rings. No answer.

He called twice more. Still nothing.

He opened their chat and asked where she was.

Twenty minutes passed. Emma still hadn’t replied.

Daniel suddenly remembered—on the day he left for his trip, Emma had told him she wanted to break up.

He hadn’t taken it seriously at the time.

He’d thought she was just angry, just saying things she didn’t mean. That she’d never actually leave.

A thought shot up from somewhere deep inside him.

He crushed it immediately.

No way.

There was no way Emma would actually break up with him.

Driven by something he couldn’t name, Daniel went upstairs.

He pushed open Emma’s bedroom door—and froze in the doorway.

The room was half-empty. Everything that belonged to her was gone.

He walked in. Pulled open the closet. Her clothes were gone too—just a few of his own jackets hanging there, alone.

Daniel stood in front of the open closet, his throat slowly going dry.

Emma had moved out.
