Chloe and I had our farewell lunch at our favorite bistro.
She gripped her water glass, practically vibrating with excitement.
“You have no idea how miserable Serena and her cronies are. Nobody wants to be seen with them.”
“Hayes was fired by the board last night. Liam’s company issued a statement clarifying everything, then pulled the ten-million-dollar donation. Serena’s Legacy Initiative is dead in the water.”
She was so satisfied her face was flushed.
“What about you?” she asked, looking at me. “What’s next?”
“First, divorce,” I said. “Then, Geneva. I’m taking over the family business there.”
Chloe’s jaw dropped.
“Oh my God… so you were the real boss all along. Serena was just an impostor.”
She slapped the table.
“This feels so good.”
I laughed, too.
The weight that had been pressing on me for so long seemed to be lifting.
Before we parted, I asked her, “Do you want me to connect you with a better firm?”
Chloe shook her head.
“I want to get there on my own. If you’re not capable enough for the position you’re in, the fall is a long way down.”
We both laughed.
We didn’t have to say who we were talking about.
