He Chose His Ex So I Chose My Empire Chapter 22

He Chose His Ex So I Chose My Empire Chapter 22

Our marriage had reached its end.

But Liam refused to sign the divorce papers.

“Is there really no other way?”

He stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking utterly exhausted.

The man who had always been so decisive, so confident, so in control, now had a glint of moisture in his eyes.

“Elara,” he said, looking at me, “you loved me so much before.”

I smiled faintly, a smile devoid of warmth.

“And you cared so much about Serena before, didn’t you?”

Liam’s face went pale.

When he spoke again, his voice was raw.

“I was never in love with Serena.”

“The one I love is you. The you who hid her name and wanted to prove herself on her own terms.”

He took a step forward, desperate to explain.

“Elara, the reason I was so cold to you, the reason I let the world believe those stories about Serena and me… it was because of your grandfather.”

I froze.

“Mr. Vance asked me to do it,” Liam said. “He said it was a test for you, his heir. He wanted to see how you would persevere when no one helped you, when even the person you trusted most seemed to be on the other side.”

As he spoke, his face filled with regret.

“He wanted to see your resolve.”

My eyes welled with tears.

Not because I was touched.

But because of the sheer, crushing injustice of it all.

So all the pain, the doubt, the struggle I had endured had been nothing more than an orchestrated test.
