He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 39
On the night of the awards ceremony, Rowan got called into an emergency surgery.
He called that afternoon to tell me.
“I might not make it.”
The background was chaotic, voices calling out medication names.
A flash of our anniversary dinner two years ago went through my mind.
The same kind of call. The same rushed explanation.
But this time, he wasn’t lying.
And he wasn’t deciding for me that I should just understand.
“How’s the patient?” I asked.
“Multiple fractures, car crash. Needs to go into the OR immediately.”
“Then go.”
“But tonight—”
“Rowan, you’re a doctor.”
I paused.
“Just let me know how it goes when you’re done.”
“Okay.”
He didn’t promise to make it up to me. He didn’t end the call with *don’t be mad*.
He only said, his voice serious, “I’m sorry I can’t be there with you. I know how much tonight means.”
I hung up and walked into the venue with Jenna.
When they announced the winner for Play of the Year, I was gripping her hand so tightly my knuckles were white.
The host said my name.
Jenna’s scream was louder than all the applause combined.
I walked onto the stage, the lights so bright I couldn’t see the audience.
And in that moment, I didn’t think about broken bones, or rainy nights, or the version of me who once sat alone in a hospital bed, telling anyone who would listen that I didn’t need them.
All I saw was our entire company on their feet.
This story had started as a stack of pages in a cardboard box.
I was the one who wrote it, and we were the ones who brought it to the stage.
