He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 05
The community center was packed with soccer parents.
I held Maisie’s hand and found a seat in the back row.
Onstage, a “storm hero” badge pinned to his chest, Evan was speaking with a practiced catch in his voice.
“The situation was just too dangerous. I had to make a difficult choice and prioritize the most vulnerable among us—a mother and her child. That wasn’t heroism. That was just neighbors helping neighbors.”
Brooke, seated in the front row with tears in her eyes, was the first to start clapping.
The room erupted in applause.
Evan opened his arms to accept a bouquet of flowers.
Just then, a process server in a dark suit cut through the crowd and walked directly onto the stage.
“Mr. Evan Landry.”
The microphone was still on.
Every person in the room heard it.
The server held out a sheaf of documents.
“You are being served with a petition for emergency sole custody.”
The applause died instantly.
The smile froze on Evan’s face, his hand hovering in midair.
After a stunned moment, he had no choice but to take the papers in front of everyone, his face ashen as his eyes scanned the crowd.
That’s when he saw me, sitting in the very last row.
I didn’t give him a chance to speak. I didn’t start a fight with Brooke.
I simply straightened Maisie’s coat, took her hand, and stood up.
People on both sides of the aisle stepped back, creating a path for us as their eyes darted between the “hero” on stage and me.
Just as we reached the exit, I heard Evan shout my name.
I didn’t look back.
