He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 06
Evan didn’t show up for the first meeting with the lawyers. He sent his attorney to sit across the table from me.
The man opened his file and got straight to the point.
“Ms. Claire travels frequently for work and cannot provide a stable, consistent presence for the child. Mr. Landry, on the other hand, has deep roots in the community as a coach and is better suited for primary custody.”
My lawyer didn’t respond. She simply slid a set of bank statements across the table.
“These are the records of transfers Mr. Landry made from the family’s hurricane emergency fund. The total comes to eighteen thousand dollars.”
The other attorney’s eyes dropped to the papers, and his expression faltered.
My lawyer continued, her voice level.
“The recipient was Brooke Mercer. The memos list ‘tuition’ and ‘rent.’ We will argue this was an improper transfer of marital assets. If he fails to return the full amount prior to the division of property, we will move to freeze all personal accounts in his name.”
The attorney was silent for several seconds before trying to pivot back to my job.
“Ms. Claire’s work schedule—”
My lawyer closed her file.
“She has already arranged a transfer. She will be using her personal savings and her share of the marital assets to support Maisie’s trauma therapy and start a new life here.”
He blinked, looking at me reflexively.
He had assumed my career was my weakness.
He had assumed it was Evan’s trump card in the custody battle.
But I wasn’t going to give them that opening.
“I submitted my resignation last week,” I said calmly.
“I quit my job.”
