He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 12

The day after the restraining order took effect, my lawyer received an email Brooke had sent to Evan, now part of the evidence discovery.

At last, she had put her plan in writing.

If the complaint against me had succeeded, I would have lost custody.

Once Evan had Maisie, Brooke planned to marry him and bring Sadie into the new family.

“That way we’ll finally be a real family,” she wrote.

“And then I’ll be able to use your money, openly and legitimately.”

At the next supervised visit, Evan stood by the door of the activity room, looking haggard.

“Claire, I didn’t know she was thinking that,” he said, repeating the words like a mantra.

I stood holding Maisie’s jacket, my expression unreadable.

“You didn’t know she gambled.”

“You didn’t know she was editing our calendar to manufacture a record of my neglect.”

“And you didn’t know she was planning to frame me to take my daughter.”

Evan’s lips moved, but no sound came out.

“She lied to me,” he finally managed.

“Did she?”

A humorless laugh escaped me.

“Evan, in this entire disaster, besides knowing to get her and Sadie out before the hurricane hit, what exactly did you know?”

The blood drained from his face.

The social worker opened the door, signaling that the visit had started.

Evan immediately dropped to a crouch in front of Maisie, rushing to make a promise.

“Sweetheart, Daddy won’t take care of anyone else from now on. I’ll only be your coach. We’ll only go to soccer together, okay?”

Maisie didn’t move.

She just asked quietly,

“What about Sadie?”

Evan froze.

Looking right at him, Maisie adopted the same placating tone he had once used on her.

“You said Sadie doesn’t have a dad, so she’s worse off than me,” she said seriously. “You said I had to be good and not make a fuss.”

“So you should stay with her.”

Evan jerked his head up, as if he were hearing those words for the very first time.

“What?”
