He Locked Me Out Now He’s Begging Me Back Chapter 45
I was just about to close the door to my office when my phone buzzed with a notification from the front desk.
I had a delivery.
The package wasn’t large. The sender’s name on the label read *Daniel*.
I opened it in the lobby.
Inside was only an old wooden box. When I lifted the lid, the key to the old house lay quietly on a bed of velvet, with a note tucked beside it.
“This place was always yours.”
I looked at it for a few seconds, and then, suddenly, it struck me as ridiculous.
If a place really belongs to you, no one needs to send you the key after the fact.
And no one needs to admit you had the right to return only after they’ve lost everything.
Besides, the house had already been sold.
The key opened nothing.
The sentence meant nothing, either.
I closed the lid, carried the box to the end of the hall, and opened the metal door to the trash chute. The box dropped from my hand, and a dull thud echoed up from below.
I let the door swing shut.
The last thing that had followed me from my old life disappeared just like that.
Back in the condo, I went into my office and opened my laptop.
The timeline for the new project was still open where I had left it that afternoon. I replied to two emails, rearranged next week’s meetings, and then opened the smart home system recommended by the building management.
