He Locked Me Out Now He’s Begging Me Back Chapter 46

Add device. Connect lock. Set lighting.

At last, the page for user permissions appeared.

I typed in a name.

Claire Morgan.

The identity options appeared one by one below: Guest, Family Member, Administrator, Owner.

I selected the last one.

Owner.

The system asked if I wanted to add any additional users.

I chose No.

The screen held only one name. No countdown. No expiration date. No one who could override me and decide who got to come in or who should move to a different room.

My phone lit up on the desk.

A message from my father: *You settling in all right your first night? Check the windows and doors?*

I got up, turned on all the lights in the living room, took a picture of the sofa, the dining table, and the tall fiddle-leaf fig bathed in warm yellow light, and sent it to him.

“Everything’s fine.”

A few seconds later, he replied with a thumbs-up emoji.

I set my phone down and slowly walked through the living room, kitchen, and office.

Every piece of furniture stood where I had chosen to put it.

Every drawer held my things.

Every light and every lock answered to me alone.

Late that night, I turned off the living room lamp and walked into the master bedroom.

The door closed behind me.

I slid the lock into place with a crisp click.

No red light.

No rejection.

This time, there wasn’t a single room in the house waiting for someone else to vacate it first.

At last, I no longer had to live in anyone else’s “temporary arrangement,” and I no longer had to wait for anyone to open the door for me.

The next morning, Marisol sent me a link.

“You should probably see this.”

The link was to Nextdoor.

The poster was Tessa.
