He Married Another So I Accepted My Arranged Husband Chapter 30
Ten minutes turned into an hour.
By the time I finished correcting the last bug in the model, it was already dark outside.
When I walked out of the office, Desmond was still sitting on the sofa.
A file rested across his lap. He had already finished two online meetings.
I felt a pang of guilt.
“You could have just left.”
“I know.”
He closed his laptop.
“But I said I would come get you.”
That made me pause.
Salvatore had said he’d be right back more times than I could count.
Eventually, I had stopped believing in waiting.
Desmond seemed to read my expression.
“Indigo, staying here was my choice.”
“You don’t need to drop your work to make it up to me because I waited an hour.”
“Next time, if you think you’ll be late, just let me know. I can wait at the restaurant. At least there’ll be food.”
I laughed.
“So all you care about is a missed meal?”
“I care about you, too.”
He took my hand.
“But the two things aren’t mutually exclusive.”
We didn’t go to the restaurant we had planned on.
We found a small place by the roadside that was still open, and the owner brought us two plates of hot pasta.
Halfway through the meal, my phone rang.
The technical committee was calling to tell me the first round of stress testing had passed.
I stood up instinctively.
“I need to go back.”
Desmond didn’t try to stop me. He just set his car keys on the table.
“I’ll drive you.”
That night, the entire engineering team worked until dawn.
The system showed an anomaly in the second round of testing, then stabilized again just before sunrise.
When I walked out of the server room, exhausted, Desmond was at the far end of the corridor, on the phone.
He hadn’t come in to offer suggestions, and he hadn’t used his Bellandi port access to pressure my team. He had just waited.
When he saw me, he hung up and handed me a warm cup of coffee.
“Did it work?”
“It passed the test.”
“That’s still worth celebrating.”
I took the cup.
This time, someone was waiting for me.
Not to make me give up what I was doing.
Just to wait until I was finished, and then go home with me.
