He Moved His Lover In I Moved My Money Out Chapter 31
“Ms. Rothman, my mentor said you almost lost your lead designer position once.”
“Not almost. I did lose it.”
“Weren’t you scared?”
I thought about it.
“Yes.”
She seemed startled by the answer.
“But you can be scared and still do the next thing. Save the documents. Call the lawyer. Finish the drawing in front of you. Leave the people who don’t respect you.”
The girl nodded seriously.
Someone called to her from a distance, and she ran off, clutching her papers.
My mentor came to stand beside me.
“That sounded like a very impressive life lesson.”
“I learned from the best.”
She sniffed, though there was a smile in her eyes.
That afternoon, my lawyer sent a final closing email.
All returned funds had been fully settled.
The Newport property transfer was complete.
The divorce judgment and no-contact provision remained in force.
There were no longer any outstanding matters between Graham and me.
I archived the email and turned off my phone.
That evening, I returned alone to my new house by the river.
There was only one key in the entryway.
Outside the living room windows, the rain had stopped, and the river lay under a wash of pale gold from the setting sun. By the fireplace, there was one armchair—the one I had chosen for myself.
No one’s name was carved beside mine into the walls.
I switched on the lights, and the whole house slowly came alive.
I once thought home was a future two people promised each other.
Now, I understand that home must first be a place where you never have to ask for permission, never have to trade your silence for a seat at the table.
I closed the door and slipped the key into my pocket.
This time, I was the one who opened the door.
And the life ahead belongs only to me.
The End
