He Priced Me At A Penny So I Married Another Chapter 15
After listening, she only told me that if anything went wrong, I should call home.
Later, the landline at home was disconnected. After that, whenever I was wronged, all I could do was try to persuade myself to forget it.
Derek stepped toward me, his fingers brushing my sleeve.
“Lydia, I know you’re hurt. I’ll end things with her. Today. Right now. When we go back—”
I pulled my sleeve away and handed the quilt to Carol.
“You could have done all that yesterday in the park.”
He parted his lips but didn’t speak right away. His eyes slowly reddened.
“I never really thought you would leave. I thought you called Everett over just to scare me.”
His voice kept dropping lower.
“Before, if I didn’t answer your messages, you’d panic.”
Carol carried the quilt into the bedroom and shut the door.
My palm was suddenly empty. The pain I had been gripping so tightly was now behind that closed door, too.
“No one is touching my mother’s things again today. The people you brought are your responsibility. Take them with you.”
Derek’s shoulders slumped. He stood in the doorway, looking at me for a long time.
Everett picked up the shopping bag by the door and set it in the hall.
Tori stared at him, her voice hoarse.
“She runs to you the second she hits trouble, and you’re happy to take her. She’s been with Derek for years. If you stay with her, she’ll make you miserable sooner or later.”
Everett turned and came to stand beside me.
“I’m willing to come. If she contacts me, of course I’m happy to.”
Then he opened the door wider, leaving them a clear path downstairs.
I walked to the doorway and kicked my slippers back into the apartment.
“Don’t come again.”
Just before the door shut, Derek suddenly called out, “Lydia.”
I turned the lock and heard his voice, muffled on the other side of the door.
“I already refunded the one cent.”
Inside, Carol tucked the broken thread into her sewing box.
I sat down beside her, took the backing cloth, and lowered my head to thread the needle.
