He Replaced His Wife And Lost His Mafia Empire Chapter 09

Miles had reached Lake Geneva at one in the morning.

After I sent my message and stopped responding, he went straight to a private airfield. By the time he landed in Chicago, he saw that my phone’s location was still at the old house, but no one was answering his calls.

The Moretti guards refused to let him in.

They said Dominic and I had argued and that I had left on my own. The family was not responsible for where an adult woman had gone.

Miles didn’t argue.

He didn’t call the police, either.

When you handed family matters to law enforcement, the evidence and witnesses tended to disappear.

Instead, Miles brought two neutral witnesses with him and had Costa security block the road exits. Under the rules several Chicago families used to preserve their truce, if Dominic continued to hide the whereabouts of a member of another family, it would be the same as tearing up the peace treaty with the Costas himself.

The guards still insisted I had already left.

Miles had his people pull public road footage from outside the estate. No vehicle had picked me up, but there was a trail of footprints in the snow leading from the side door toward the lake.

Once the witnesses arrived, the guards finally opened the gate.

Dominic never appeared.

He and Sloane were in the master suite on the other side of the house. Their phones were on silent, and no one dared knock while the boss was resting.

Miles followed the footprints to the boathouse and rushed me to the hospital.

He didn’t return to the old house until after daybreak.

This time, Costa advisers were with him, along with two neutral witnesses and six silent guards.

Dominic came downstairs in a robe. When he saw them, his face held nothing but irritation.

“Did Evelyn send you here to fight her battles?”

Miles said nothing. He simply had the side-door surveillance footage and the guards’ call logs played for everyone.

In the footage, Dominic snatched my handbag and shoved me into the blizzard wearing nothing but a thin dress. He then explicitly ordered that no one was to give me my phone, no car was to take me anywhere, and I was not to be allowed back in the house.

The color drained from Dominic’s face.

“How long was she outside?”

“Seven hours,” Miles said.

“That’s impossible. I thought she’d go to a neighbor’s house.”

“The nearest neighbor is three miles away, and the house is empty.”

Miles walked right up to him.

“When I found her, she could barely open her eyes.”

Dominic looked instinctively toward the window.

The tire tracks from the emergency vehicle were still carved into the snow.

The neutral witnesses didn’t accuse him. They simply sealed the call logs into a document envelope.

That file would be taken before every person who had ever recognized Dominic’s authority as boss.

For the first time, Dominic understood this was not a fight he could end with a piece of jewelry.
