Lucian’s pupils contracted.
“If the mate you want is her, and the pups only recognize her, then I’m stepping aside.” I wiped the blood from my chin. “I’m giving your family of four my blessing.”
“Don’t forget, this was always a political alliance.”
His voice was low and cold.
“What did you expect from me? Love, like a true mated pair? I can’t give you that.”
I laughed, but tears slid down my face.
He wasn’t wrong.
This claim had never been about fate or love. I was the one who had mistaken an alliance contract for a life’s destination.
Vivian took hold of Lucian’s arm.
“The children are frightened. Take them upstairs first.”
Lucian picked up a pup in each arm and followed her away. No one asked about my injury. No one called a Healer.
With the little strength she had left, Ember steadied the dizziness that threatened to overwhelm me.
In that moment, I didn’t just regret choosing Lucian. I regretted giving this family my whole self.
