He Signed My Freedom Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 27

In the past, all of those relationships had been recorded in my Luna ledgers: who couldn’t tolerate the smell of certain herbs, whose mate had died in an old war, which two families needed to enter through separate doors. I never let Lucian waste his attention on such details, so he had always assumed reception would simply run smoothly on its own.

That day, Lucian had no choice but to break off his meeting and personally placate the two offended wolves. When an elder asked why he hadn’t reviewed the Luna office’s arrangements in advance, he finally discovered that after I had relinquished my authority, no one had opened those ledgers for three full weeks.

The nursery also sent over a stack of unsigned documents. Noah’s training level needed adjustment. Iris needed a new allergy assessment. Both children required confirmation from their legal guardian.

Lucian’s first instinct was to have the staff send them to me.

Clara reminded him, “Evelyn is no longer in Highridge.”

The file said he stared at those documents for a very long time before signing them himself. But he didn’t know that Iris was afraid of needles, or that Noah secretly tore up records when his training went badly. Every blank space forced him to admit that half the fatherhood he took for granted had once rested on my labor.

One night after an alliance dinner, Lucian came home late and instinctively asked, “Where’s Evelyn?”

Clara told him that the soup, the pressed clothes, the completed meeting files, and the children’s training schedules had never appeared by magic.

I had done all of it.

“The Luna wouldn’t let us interfere,” Clara said. “She said the Alpha’s wolf grew restless after he’d been drinking, and she had to watch the heat herself.”

My fingers paused as I read that.

Back then, I truly had mistaken every little act of service for love.

Now, looking back, all I felt was how lonely I had been.
