He Signed My Freedom Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 28

The second part of the file was a set of overnight records Clara had added later.

That night, Lucian stood alone in the manor kitchen and asked a great many questions about me.

For the first time, he learned that for six years, every bowl of soup waiting when he came home had not been a staff duty. It had been my habit—waiting until he returned safely.

When he passed the master bedroom, Vivian was already asleep.

But for some reason, he did not go in. He stood in the hallway instead, his mind drifting back to the first few years after our alliance.

Back then, Lucian didn’t want to see me. He often stayed away under the excuse of patrols and meetings. I would always wait in the main hall, waking at the slightest sound of footsteps.

A few times, I fell asleep curled up on the sofa. When he passed by, he never woke me. He never covered me with a blanket, either.

Later, he sometimes stopped.

And later still, after Vivian returned to Highridge, he stopped coming home at all.

Clara also submitted an old mindlink record.

It was the only time Lucian and I had ever argued openly.

“You’re my political mate, and Noah and Iris are the pups I gave birth to,” the version of me in the recording said, her voice tight with unshed tears. “Why do all of you spend every day with another woman? Who do you think is your Luna, and who do you think is their mother?”

Lucian had answered, “If the Hart family hadn’t taken the alliance, Vivian would have been the mistress of this house from the start.”
