Celeste’s chest was heaving. She pointed at Grant and shouted, completely out of control, “But every time you got drunk, you said my sister’s name—until she showed up! I was the one by your side all those years. I helped run your household. I helped raise your daughter. When have you ever cared this much about me?”
“What gave you the right to let her take my sister’s place—and mine?”
The moment the last line fell, even she went still.
So that was what all her talk of protecting her sister and worrying about Lucy really meant.
She was afraid that once Maya entered the family, she would no longer be able to control the house in the name of grief and loyalty.
She would no longer be able to keep having Grant pay her HOA fees, her travel, and her credit card bills.
Grant looked at her for a long time, then took out his phone.
First, he removed Celeste from every shared family photo album.
Then he sent instructions to the trust’s attorney to remove her beneficiary status.

“Stop paying all expenses for Celeste Ward, effective immediately.”
