He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 15

He looked as if he hadn’t slept all night. His shirt was wrinkled, his jaw rough with stubble, his eyes bloodshot.

Six weeks earlier, at the country club, he had sat at the head of the long table, watching her interrogation with composed detachment, as if it were all just a trivial performance.

Now he was the one who had come chasing after her in disarray.

“We need to talk,” Grant said, stepping forward, his voice hoarse.

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Five minutes.” He was almost pleading. “Just five minutes.”

Maya checked the time.

“Fine.”

Grant immediately pulled the cashier’s check from his suit jacket. The edges were creased, as if he’d been carrying it for a long time.

“The twenty-four thousand, three hundred eighteen dollars and seventy-two cents you sent back—I never cashed it.”

“That’s your business.”

“I was wrong.” The hand holding the check trembled slightly. “I never should have doubted you. I never should have let Celeste and the others humiliate you. And I never should have forced you to keep proving yourself.”

He looked up at her.

“You’re not an inheritance hunter. You never wanted my money.”

Maya was silent for a moment, then asked, “So you came all this way because, after reading the chat logs, you finally have evidence proving my innocence?”

“No.” Grant spoke urgently. “I just want you to come back. Lucy misses you, too. We can start over. I’ll deal with everyone—”

“But what about before you had the evidence?”

Grant froze.

Maya took the cashier’s check from him, then calmly pushed it back into his hand.

“I’m not going back. Because the problem was never just Celeste.”

She looked at the man who had been given countless chances to stand by her side and had, every single time, chosen to stand back and watch.

“Grant, Celeste only handed you a script. But every time, you were the one who chose to step onstage and find me guilty.”
