He stared at the email for a long time.
The old Grant would have asked what they talked about.
He would have asked Lucy to pass along an apology.
He might even have convinced himself that if Maya was willing to speak to Lucy, then her heart had softened.
But this time, he just closed the laptop.
That evening, when Lucy came home from school, she went into the study on her own.
“I talked to Maya.”
Grant’s fingers tightened slightly.
“I know.”
“You’re not going to ask what we talked about?”
“That’s between the two of you.”
Lucy looked at him for a few seconds.
“You weren’t like this before.”
Grant gave a bitter smile. “That’s why she left.”
Lucy didn’t comfort him.
She placed printed screenshots of the chat logs on his desk.
“This one—Celeste says the bracelet is in her car.”
“This one—she tells everyone not to tell Maya my allergy restrictions on purpose.”
“Every line underneath that, you saw.”
Grant swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
