Adrian seemed to turn to stone.
When he finally spoke, his voice was strained.
“Mother, I’m talking about Claire. Not someone else.”
Margaret smiled.
“You silly boy, I’m not so old that my hearing and memory have failed me.”
“Did you forget? A year ago, after you and she had that falling-out, she went to her grandmother’s in Newport. She was married there.”
She waved a hand, and the staff moved the display panels away.
The moment they were gone, Adrian’s eyes met mine.
It was as if he only then saw the wedding ring on my left hand. He staggered back, his face a mask of disbelief.
Ignoring everyone around us, he strode toward me.
“Why are you married?” he demanded. “You were supposed to—”
I met his gaze with ice in mine, and he swallowed the rest of the sentence.
*Supposed to love him. Supposed to marry no one but him.*
But in my previous life, I had loved him, and I had married him. And what had it gotten me?
I had been deliriously happy, thinking I had finally won the heart of the man I loved. Though Adrian’s affection was never as obvious as mine, Evelyn had known him since childhood. She understood him better than anyone.
