He Was Reborn To Claim Me But I’m Already Married Chapter 06

Evelyn used to say Adrian was like one of those heroes in a romance novel who says one thing and means another.

He could be desperately in love and still pretend he didn’t care.

For example, when I was eighteen and had just returned to Boston from Newport, Evelyn introduced us for the first time.

He took one look at me and immediately turned his head, refusing to look again.

“Where did this country girl come from?” he’d said, his tone clipped and awkward. “She’s painfully plain.”

Evelyn was so furious she threw a cup of tea at him.

Later, when she brought me to other events, Adrian still never looked at me.

But Evelyn told me in private that Adrian had come to her.

He had asked her to give me a few small gifts as an apology.

And he had told her not to tell me it was from him.

“But of course I told you,” she’d said. “You’re my sister, not some stranger.”

Yet every time I saw Adrian, his gaze was always on Evelyn.

For a while, I couldn’t make sense of it.

It wasn’t until after we were married that I finally allowed myself to believe it.

Adrian liked me, too.

But that certainty shattered almost as soon as it formed.

Evelyn died.

Somehow, Adrian found out I had switched our paintings. If it weren’t for me, his wife would have been Evelyn, and she never would have died in that fire.

Overnight, our relationship turned colder than that of strangers.

Again and again, he drowned himself in regret. More than once, he demanded to know where Evelyn was buried.

Watching his performance of profound devotion made me sick.

And I refused to yield.

I just wouldn’t tell him.

Until the moment I died, neither of us ever backed down.

Thankfully, I still managed to fool him one last time.
