He Was Reborn To Claim Me But I’m Already Married Chapter 17
He started driving again, faster and faster.
Then Daniel’s voice came from behind us, sharp with panic.
“Claire!”
The speed kept climbing. I could barely stay upright.
And then there was a heavy thud on the roof, as if someone had landed on top of the vehicle.
The SUV immediately spun out of control. The front tires had been shredded by police spike strips, and a shrill alarm began to wail.
Daniel’s hand reached down through the open sunroof, his face a mask of terror.
“The state police laid spike strips! There’s a cliff ahead! Claire, give me your hand!”
I grabbed his hand and scrambled out through the sunroof. Only then did I see that one of Adrian’s legs was trapped beneath a crumpled pedal.
He kept struggling, making the vehicle harder and harder to control.
After another violent swerve, the SUV flipped onto its side and began to slide toward the cliff’s edge.
I was thrown from the vehicle.
I landed hard, barely managing to stop myself at the precipice.
Daniel, meanwhile, was hanging over the drop, one hand scrabbling for purchase.
I clutched his hand with both of mine, not daring to loosen my grip.
But the gravel beneath me was too loose, and there was nothing to brace against. My body was slowly slipping toward the edge.
Luckily, the Massachusetts State Police rescue team arrived just in time.
Only after I had escaped death and collapsed into Daniel’s arms did I hear a cold, bitter laugh.
When I turned my head, I saw Adrian, both of his legs mangled and bloody.
“Claire, you didn’t even look at me,” he said, his voice hollow. “All you cared about was saving him.”
“I believe you now. You really don’t love me anymore.”
I let out a breath, burrowed deeper into Daniel’s arms, and gave Adrian nothing but my back.
By now, Adrian had probably gone completely insane. It was best not to engage with him at all.
