He Was Reborn To Claim Me But I’m Already Married Chapter 23
Margaret did not hire him a lawyer.
He panicked.
When he appeared in court again, hoping for leniency, he agreed on the spot to testify against Adrian.
Adrian sat in his wheelchair and glared at him.
“You were the one who said no one was at the back door. You were the one who said she was already asleep.”
“And now you want to pin it all on me?”
The moment the words left his mouth, the courtroom went still.
His lawyer’s face paled, and he grabbed Adrian’s shoulder.
But it was too late.
With his own words, Adrian had confirmed that he knew I had not consented to go with him and that he knew his assistant planned to take me while I slept.
The assistant froze.
Then, as if clutching a life raft, he nodded frantically.
“Yes, yes, Mr. Hawthorne told me to do it!”
“He said Miss Bennett was just angry, and that if he took her away, she would come around eventually.”
“He also said that no matter how he treated her before, she always forgave him in the end…”
All the blood drained from Adrian’s face.
Before.
Of course, he didn’t mean in this life.
But no one except me knew that.
The judge would not believe in a past life, nor would a marriage from that life turn this one’s kidnapping into a lovers’ quarrel.
The law cared only about what he had done in this life.
This time, he could no longer use the excuse *she loves me* as a reason to hurt me.
As we left the courthouse, Evelyn linked her arm through mine.
She had just heard the assistant’s testimony and was so furious her eyes were red.
“Last time, he knelt in front of you, going on about his twenty baton bruises, sounding so pitiful.”
“And the moment he turned around, he helped Adrian kidnap you.”
I thought of that day, too.
The assistant had dropped to his knees so quickly, had cried so convincingly.
Now, to save himself, he was just as quick to sell out his boss.
I didn’t have to do a thing.
I simply left them to devour each other.
