His 47 Seconds Of Silence Cost Him Everything Chapter 27

Hearing it now from a child still made my chest ache.

But I didn’t use a soft lie to protect his hope this time.

“Because that home hurt me. Leaving was the only way for me to be safe.”

He stared at me, his expression blank.

“Can adults leave because they’re scared, too?”

“Yes.”

“Even if someone in the family needs them?”

“Yes. Needing someone doesn’t give you the right to hurt them.”

Jude lowered his head and wiped his eyes.

After a long moment, he said, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have hidden.”

“You weren’t the one who planned it.”

“But I laughed.”

“Because you were told it was a game.”

I paused.

“You’re responsible for the choices you make later in life. But you don’t have to spend the rest of your life carrying the weight of the adults’ choices from back then.”

He nodded, not quite understanding.

As the call was about to end, he asked, “Can I still call you Bonus Mom?”

My nose stung.

“No.”

Fresh tears slipped down his face.

“But you can call me Mara.”

“Then… are we still family?”

“No.”

I said it softly, but I didn’t look away.

“We were people who truly cared about each other once. That was real, too.”

The therapist said their time was up.

In a rush, Jude pulled a folded sheet of paper from under the table.

It was the same family portrait he’d drawn.

Except Evan, Cassidy, Linda, and Mark had all been rubbed out with an eraser.

In the middle of the page, only two faint figures remained.

“I didn’t know if I should send it to you.”

“Keep it,” I said. “When you’re older, you can decide what you want to remember.”

After the screen went dark, I sat there for a long time.

I did not become his mother, and I did not agree to go back to save him.

I only gave him the words that no adult had ever been willing to give me.

Loving someone should never require you to sacrifice yourself first.
