His Wedding My Exit Chapter 08
There was a note of surprise in her voice. “You know?”
“If you really wanted to be with him, you would have said yes ten years ago. You wouldn’t have waited until right before his wedding just to rub it in my face.”
She went completely quiet.
I asked, “You just can’t stand the idea that one day he truly won’t revolve around you anymore, can you?”
Adele’s breath caught, sharp and audible.
I kept going. “You don’t want him, but you want him to remember forever what you liked, to remember your old habits, to keep every last thing you left behind.”
“As long as those things are still there, you get to tell yourself you’ll always be more special than me.”
The line stayed silent a long while.
At last Adele murmured, “I really did always believe that no matter when I looked back, he’d still be right there.”
“When the two of you started dating, I didn’t feel much of anything.”
“Not until you were actually about to get married.”
“Brody told me Hayden listens to you about everything now, that the apartment was ready, that he’d finally have a home of his own.”
“That day, all at once, I felt so uneasy.” She paused for a couple of seconds.
“That’s why I brought up that dress on purpose, the day we all looked at the wedding photos.”
“I just wanted to know if he still remembered.”
I asked, “And then what?”
“I just wanted to know if he still remembered.”
I asked, “And then what?”
“It was the same with the apartment.” Her voice sank lower.
“I knew there was no real reason I had to measure that wall.”
“I just wanted to walk in and see it one more time.” She had finally let all of it out.
I wasn’t angry. What I felt instead was that it was absurd.
“Adele, do you know what the most disgusting part of this is?” She said nothing.
“It isn’t that you deliberately provoked me.”
“It’s that you clearly don’t want this man, and yet you use the humiliation of another woman as a tool to prove your own importance.” Her breathing turned ragged.
I hung up on her, just like that. After that, Adele never contacted me again.
