His Wedding My Exit Chapter 09

His Wedding My Exit Chapter 09

With the original wedding date two weeks off, Hayden finally called me from a number I didn’t recognize. I picked up. His first words were, “Where did you go?”

“Dallas.”

“For how long?”

“Six months.”

The anxiety in his voice was obvious now. “What about the wedding?”

“It’s canceled.”

“I’ve already booked a new hotel.”

“Then you can go ahead and marry yourself.” The line held quiet for a few seconds.

“Freya, do you really have to talk like this?”

“Then what did you want to hear?”

“Come back, and let’s talk.”

“I’m not talking.”

“Six years together, and you’re ending it without a single conversation?” I stood at the hotel window, watching the traffic crawl below.

“Hayden, your friends put my wedding photo up on a screen and gave it a four, and you thought it was a joke.”

“Not one of those save-the-date cards or welcome boxes had my name on it, and you thought I was being petty.”

“The apartment we lived in for two years was designed by another woman, and you still thought I was being petty.”

“You always decided these were small things.” I paused.

“You always decided these were small things.” I paused.

“But if I married you, the next few decades of my life would probably be built out of small things exactly like these.”

“So I’m not marrying you.” He said nothing for a long time.

In the end, he actually landed on that same line again.

“Adele and I truly have nothing going on.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you…”

“Because I never once held your past against you.”

“But you shoved me into the spot she left empty, and then you kept complaining that I didn’t look good enough standing there.” The other end of the line went utterly silent.

This time, I was the one who hung up first.
