I Heard His Thoughts Never His Love Chapter 05

“Impossible.”

He denied it almost instantly.

He turned sharply toward my cousin, his expression terrifyingly cold.

“She couldn’t have gone to the airport. This is my engagement party. There’s no way she wouldn’t come.”

I had always cared about him too much.

Before, if he spoke to Serena for a little too long, I would sulk for hours.

Now he was supposedly getting engaged to her.

How could I possibly have no reaction?

I had to be stuck in traffic.

Or hiding somewhere on purpose, waiting for him to come find me.

Silas pulled out his phone with shaking hands and dialed the number he knew by heart.

“Sorry, the number you have dialed is powered off…”

The cold automated voice answered.

He called again.

Then a third time.

A fourth.

Still off.

His hands trembled as he opened WhatsApp and sent message after message.

Where are you?

Nora, stop this.

Today’s engagement is fake. I never wanted to marry anyone else.

Come back. I can explain.

I was wrong.

Red exclamation marks appeared beside every message.

Silas froze.

I had blocked him.

“No.”

He whispered the word, as if he didn’t know whether he was speaking to everyone else or trying to convince himself.

“She wouldn’t really leave.”

My parents finally sensed something was wrong and started calling me too.

My phone was off.

Their messages went unanswered.

They contacted relatives and friends.

No one knew where I was.

My mother looked uncomfortable, but she still said,

“She’s always been dramatic. She probably went somewhere to sulk.”

“Forget about her for now. We have all these guests here. We can’t keep everyone waiting.”

My father frowned in agreement.

“Right. Let’s finish the ceremony first. Serena is already dressed for it. Don’t embarrass her.”

“We’ll find Nora after the party.”

Serena walked over, lifted her skirt, and gently linked her arm through Silas’s.

“They’re right. Nora probably just wants you to worry.”

“Silas, let’s get through the ceremony first.”

“Once the engagement is official and she hears about it, she won’t be able to sit still. You can go comfort her afterward.”

Her voice remained calm, as if everything were under control.

But standing in the middle of the crowded room, Silas felt the world spin.

This was only supposed to make me angry.

Serena had promised that once news of the engagement spread, I would get jealous.

I would come looking for him like I always had.

They had agreed beforehand that the engagement was fake.

The moment I gave in, he would cancel it.

Everything had been planned.

So why had everything gone wrong?

I hadn’t gotten jealous.

I hadn’t given in.

I hadn’t even come to look.

I had gone to the airport.

I was really leaving him.

Silas struggled to control his rapidly unraveling emotions and stared at my parents.

“Do you know where she’s going?”

They exchanged blank looks.

“No.”

“She didn’t tell us.”

My mother thought for a while.

Then her expression suddenly changed.

“Wait. She mentioned something a while ago. She said she’d applied to graduate school at the University of Edinburgh.”

“We were busy with Serena and your engagement, so I forgot.”

Silas’s pupils contracted.

“Where exactly?”

My mother hesitated.

“Well… she didn’t say. We didn’t ask.”

“What is she studying? When did she apply? How long will she be gone?”

Question after question.

They couldn’t answer a single one.

My father grew impatient.

“She’s an adult. She’s going to school, not disappearing off the face of the earth. I’m sure the university has records.”

“Today is your engagement to Serena. Whatever this is, deal with it afterward.”

Silas stared at them.

For the first time, he felt with terrifying certainty that he had lost something important.

Something more important than his own life.

“Silas.”

Serena spoke again, now with a hint of impatience.

“Everyone’s waiting. Let’s start the engagement ceremony.”

“Engagement?”

Silas slowly turned toward her.

He stared at Serena in her formal dress.

The panic in his eyes gradually hardened into rage.

Then he flipped the table in front of him.
