Glasses and plates shattered.
Food and wine spilled across the floor.
The guests cried out and backed away.
“You told me to use the engagement to provoke her!”
Silas’s eyes were bloodshot.
His voice was nearly out of control.
“You said she’d get jealous! You said she’d come back! You said this couldn’t go wrong!”
“This was fake! Did you actually think I wanted to marry you?”
“You could never compare to her!”
Serena had probably never been humiliated in public before.
Her face twisted.
Whispers spread around the room.
She clenched her fingers and struggled to stay composed.
“Silas, what are you talking about?”
“We agreed on this together. Even if the plan didn’t work, we can calm down and figure something else out.”
She reached for him.
Silas recoiled as though she had burned him.
“Don’t touch me!”
“I’m going to find her.”
He stumbled toward the door.
Mr. and Mrs. Grey stopped him.
Silas was breathing hard.
His face was white, and his fingers shook uncontrollably.
Mrs. Grey immediately realized something was wrong and held him tightly.
“Silas, calm down.”
“Nora only left to study. She’s safe. How are you supposed to go after her in this condition?”
Mr. Grey turned toward the guests.
“I’m sorry. Silas is emotionally unstable. We’ll end the party here.”
“From what we just heard, there seems to have been a misunderstanding between the kids.”
“The engagement was arranged too hastily anyway. Since nothing was properly settled, we won’t be discussing it again.”
The Greys forcibly took Silas away.
Serena remained alone in the wrecked banquet hall.
Wine stained the expensive dress she had chosen so carefully.
Her face shifted between red and white.
Under everyone’s curious and mocking stares, she forced herself to smile.
“It’s fine. Just an accident.”
“Think of this as an ordinary dinner. Please keep eating.”
But her dress, the corsages scattered across the floor, and Silas’s declaration that she could never compare to Nora made her attempt at dignity almost laughable.
