I Made His Wife’s Dress Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 20

I walked out of the room.

Julien came after me. He didn’t ask any questions. He just bought a can of warm tomato soup from the vending machine and handed it to me.

“The closest thing to actual food this place has.”

I took a sip and grimaced at the salt.

“Bad?”

“Awful.”

“Then at least you can still feel something.”

On the other side of the door, Sabine’s crying rose and fell. Adrian’s voice was a low murmur, repeating only one question: Who is the father?

I leaned against the corridor wall and finished the terrible soup.

“You’re not going to ask how I feel?”

Julien glanced at the empty can. “Six years ago, in an atelier that was twenty-seven degrees below comfortable and three degrees above freezing, you told me you weren’t cold. If you don’t want to answer a question, all I’ll get is a lie.”

“Then here’s the truth.” I crushed the can in my hand. “It’s not that it doesn’t hurt. It’s that what hurts isn’t losing Adrian. It’s that I really believed, back then, that if I just endured a little longer, someone would eventually give me my place back.”

Julien took the can from me and dropped it into the recycling bin. “At least now you know you can make your own place.”
