I Made His Wife’s Dress Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 21
Julien’s phone buzzed.
After reading the message, his expression grew sharp. “There’s an opening in the paired exchange chain you asked me to re-check.”
“A new donor?”
“More precisely, a chain initiated by one non-directed donor, with two incompatible donor-recipient pairs participating. The donor at the end of the chain is a preliminary match for your mother. The person who submitted the materials won’t speak to the foundation. He only asked to see you.”
He handed me his phone.
On the screen was a photograph of an old-fashioned paper pattern. In the lower right corner, someone had written in blue tailor’s chalk:
Bring the unfinished length of red thread. She’ll know where to find me.
I stared at the words, my fingertips slowly going cold.
There was only one person in the world who knew about that red thread.
“The coordinator emphasized that the meeting and the donation decision must remain separate,” Julien said. “If you refuse to see him, the exchange chain still proceeds according to hospital protocol. Your going won’t change anyone’s medical priority.”
I nodded. My mother needed hope, but I wasn’t willing to let that hope rest on another kind of coercion.
