I Made His Wife’s Dress Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 48

My mother held the chalk in silence for a long time.

“All his life, Paolo kept cutting ropes for other people,” she said. “When it came to himself, he never knew where to go.”

“Sofia’s guardianship evaluation has already started.”

“Don’t make decisions for her out of gratitude.”

“I know. She can refuse me.”

My mother nodded and put the chalk in the bedside drawer.

“Paolo saved you, and I helped him once, but none of that gets to override Sofia herself,” she said. “If you care about a young person, the first thing you do isn’t find the best road for them. It’s making sure they know they can leave any road.”

I wrote that sentence down in my guardianship notes.

When I stepped out of the room, Julien was waiting by the window.

He handed me a slim document envelope. “The results of the court-supervised sampling. Adrian authorized his lawyer to send them to you, too, since the reason given for ending your engagement involved you. Whether you read it is up to you.”

I broke the seal.
