I Saved His Daughter And The Mafia Boss Won’t Let Me Leave Chapter 09

Greg looks around. Every face in the hallway is ice cold. Nobody’s on his side.

He grabs Sandra and their kid and drags them out without another word.

At the door, Sandra spins around one last time.

“This isn’t over!”

I watch them go, frowning.

“We’re just gonna let her walk? What if she comes after Lily?”

Roman doesn’t look concerned.

“They’re done. Accounts frozen, investigation coming. Trust me, they’ve got bigger things to worry about than us right now.”

“And I’m putting more security around the school and around Lily. She’ll be safe.”

I nod. But something still sits wrong in my gut.

Nobody sees Sandra in the car, deleting her brother’s warning text. Or the old number she pulls up right after.

By the time we leave the school, the video of me fighting Sandra’s bodyguards is everywhere.

I’m walking out the gate with Lily’s hand in mine when I see him.

Derek. Leaning against the wall like he’s been waiting.

His eyes travel up and down my body. He doesn’t even try to hide it.

“Sera?”

He walks over, shaking his head.

“Just saw the video. Almost didn’t recognize you.”

“We’ve been divorced, what, a week? And you’re already dressed up like this, playing house with some rich guy?”

I don’t want to do this. I tighten my grip on Lily’s hand and try to walk past him.

He steps right in my way.

“Hey, hey, come on. Don’t be like that.”

“Babe, I smashed your truck for your own good. You were out there every night sweating over a grill, coming home looking like a mess. I was trying to help you see that.”

“All you had to do was say sorry. Just that. And I would’ve let the whole thing go.”

“But you had to be stubborn about it, didn’t you?”

His voice goes soft. That fake gentle tone that used to work on me.

“It’s been hard, right? Working for strangers, people looking down on you all day.”

“It hurts me to see that. It really does.”

“Just apologize. That’s all I’m asking. And I’ll forgive everything.”

I stare at him.

“What is wrong with you?”

“I didn’t do anything wrong. Apologize for what?”

Derek’s face goes hard.

“Don’t play dumb with me, Sera.”

“I trusted you to take care of my mother. And she died on your watch.”

“You don’t think that’s on you?”

“I’m being generous here. I’m not blaming you. I’m just asking you to own it.”

“Is that really so much to ask?”

He sighs like I’m a child throwing a tantrum.

“Just say you’re sorry. I’ll take you back. You won’t even need the truck anymore. I’ll get you a real shop.”

“Just quit being so damn hardheaded. Be a little softer. And you can come home.”

I almost laugh in his face.

“What about Bianca?”

He shifts. Just barely. “That’s nothing. She’s been sick. I’ve just been helping her out.”

“Your spot’s still open. I never gave it away.”

My lip curls.

Couldn’t be bothered to show up at his own mother’s hospital bed, but he’s got all the time in the world for his side piece.

He grabs my wrist. “Come on. Let’s just go home.”

The next second, a voice cuts through the air behind me. Cold enough to freeze the street.

“Get your filthy hands off my wife.”
