I Signed Away Eight Million To Leave Him Chapter 18

More than a year passed, and life with Eli settled into a calm that felt almost ordinary.

He never pushed me to talk about what I had gone through in Palm Beach. When nightmares woke me, he just handed me a glass of warm water. If I didn’t want to speak, he simply sat with me in silence.

We both worked, depositing what was left at the end of each month into a joint account.

The memo line read only two words: house fund.

The little place we had our eye on wasn’t big. The kitchen didn’t even have room for a double-door refrigerator. But it had an east-facing window and a tiny yard where we could plant flowers.

There was no trust, no fine print, and no one who could ever reclaim it in the name of kindness.

For the first time, I understood that being respected, being chosen as an equal, was worth more than any eight million dollars.

Two days before Graham’s wedding, Eli and I went to City Hall in St. Petersburg.

I didn’t wear a wedding dress, just a simple pale blue one. Eli wore the old tie I’d given him and was so nervous he checked the marriage license four times.

Only our two closest friends were there.

No floral arch. No band. No ballroom full of guests waiting to judge me.

When the clerk finished the vows, she smiled and said, “As of this moment, you are legally married.”

Eli took my hand and slipped a simple band on my finger.

It had no dazzling stone, but it fit perfectly.

In a low voice, he asked, “Is it okay?”

I smiled.

“It’s perfect.”

After leaving City Hall, we went to the beach.
