The first day my father appeared in court, reporters mobbed the courthouse steps.
Sloane was there, too.
Wearing sunglasses, she told the cameras she had known nothing about his case and had only wanted to give “an ordinary man oppressed by the wealthy” a chance to speak.
“I respect the justice system.”
“If he’s guilty, then I want him punished, too.”
She neatly extracted herself from the mess, as if none of the insinuations she’d made on camera had ever come from her mouth.
When the transport van arrived, my father was led up the courthouse steps.
He spotted Sloane at once.
“You can’t just leave me here!”
The officers tried to keep him moving, but he suddenly fought against them.
“You’re the one who had people find me! You’re the one who said I’d get money if I accused Beatrice of paying me off!”
Sloane’s face changed instantly.
“I never—”
“You’re lying!”
My father roared, his voice carrying over the officers. “Before the show, you promised—”
Her lawyer lunged forward to stop him.
But every camera around them was rolling.
